Rebuilding and revival in Haiti

Duane Moyer, field director for World Team Haiti, recently returned from a 10 day trip to evaluate relief efforts and encourage the church. While there, he heard personal stories of those who are just beginning to rebuild their homes and lives.
One pastor showed Duane the concrete slab where his home used to be. When Duane asked who cleared the rubble away, he said the youth group of the church had organized to clear the lot. The pastor’s mother was injured when the house collapsed on her, and then died of infections.Only a concrete slab remains of this Pastor's home

“It’s a crazy world when the greatest service you can render a friend is to haul away the rubble of his house. It’s even crazier when you realize what a precious gift that was – it’s not easy to get rid of rubble in a city where that is all that is left.”

There are stories of revival, of many survivors who are turning to Christ. Since the earthquake, 1,700 people have given their lives to Christ at the Côte Plage church. 1000 more accepted Christ at the Bellevue church.

The pressing question heard from every pastor was “How do we preserve this harvest?”

World Team’s Haiti Recovery Project

More than $150,000 has been raised so far for World Team’s earthquake recovery efforts. These funds have already been designated in consultation with Haitian church leaders. Any additional funds raised will be used for several much-needed efforts that are being considered.

The prayers and donations made by World Team friends and partners has helped to:

  • Provide meals to victims being treated in hospitals in the Cayes area
  • Keep Radio Lumière on the air for six months while a plan is developed for rebuilding the network (nearly half of their monthly budget used to come from within Haiti and the earthquake cut that important source of funding to a trickle)
  • Provide training in post traumatic stress counseling to Haitian pastors, and debriefing to missionary personnel who have been dealing with the realities of the rescue operation around the clock since the earthquake
  • Sponsor the Annual Convention, the first opportunity since the quake to gather pastors and believers from around Haiti to begin putting the event into a theological perspective. It has everything to do with equipping the church theologically to receive and instruct the thousands of people who are coming to Christ.
  • Meet expenses incurred by Hopitale Lumière in offering free treatment to the wounded
  • Provide meals for amputees being treated and prepared for artificial limbs etc. at Clinique Lumière
  • Help various churches begin to put up temporary structures
  • Help rebuild a school at Côte Plage
  • Cover expenses incurred in connection with evacuating people from Port au Prince to Cayes
  • Pay for engineering evaluations of church buildings and houses that did not collapse and recommend steps to secure them against future earthquakes

We give thanks for the work that has been done, but your prayers and support are still needed. Please help by giving to the Haiti Recovery Project.  Give Now
