Manila: Urban Filipino call center workers, young professionals, the urban poor

Catanduanes: Rural Filipinos, the rural poor

Overview:

Come see why the Philippines is a key player in the evangelization of Asia. Participate in Bible studies with call center workers in Manila, one of the world’s largest megacities. Experience firsthand how globalization is changing the face of this urban center, and see how reaching these people can impact the spread of the Church in the future. Smog, crowds and traffic will be softened by the warmth of the Filipino people.

Next, slow down the pace with a trip to the rural island of Catanduanes where most people live under a mixed belief system of Catholicism and animism, and some villages still have no evangelical witness.  You’ll be a part of a pioneering church planting project, helping the multinational team teach English in the Professional Development Center and make contacts with the leaders of the community to pave the way for the multiplication of Bible studies.

What will you do?

All interns will participate in language learning, evangelism, discipleship and teaching English. Other opportunities include ministry with children, youth and women. Or you might use your musical gifts or your administrative skills.

You’ll also have a chance to interact with World Team missionaries from other parts of Asia, develop a mentoring relationship with a missionary, reach out to people living in the shadow of a trash mountain, stay up all night at the Technohub talking with young professionals, and enjoy outings to better understand the cultural and religious history of the Philippines.

Trip Details:

After an orientation at our US Sending Center near Philadelphia, you’ll spend the first half of your internship in Manila. A short in-country flight will take you to Catanduanes for the second half of your experience. In Manila, you’ll stay at the mission guest house or with Filipino or missionary families. In Catanduanes you’ll stay with Filipino or missionary families.

Best Candidate:

You’ll do well if you come with a teachable spirit, ready to learn from others – even if they do things differently. Ideally you’ll have some language learning experience. Be agreeable to limitations on internet use and calls from home. Come with your eyes wide open to the cultural and spiritual differences that will make you lean more heavily upon Jesus.
